LONDON (REUTERS):
The British Government said yesterday it would push ahead with plans to merge many of the country's police forces despite vociferous opposition from some senior officers, police authorities and
politicians.
Home Secretary Charles Clarke said he was 'satisfied' that merging some of the smaller forces would be the most efficient and effective way forward for policing.
He intended the proposals to be approved by Parliament in autumn and for the new merged forces to come into being April 2008.
