GEORGETOWN, GUYANA (CMC):
Guyanese lawmakers have voted overwhelmingly in support of the Competition and Fair Trading Bill even though the Opposition expressed concerns about some of the measures.
The main opposition People's National Congress Reform expressed strong reservations on three clauses of the measure which legislator, Winston Murray, said "could allow for an abuse of dominant power."
But Tourism, Industry and Commerce Minister, Manzoor Nadir disagreed, noting that "there are adequate safeguards to prevent such irregularities."
While a "clear thrust of the legislation is to break up monopolies" the debate earlier this week remained silent on the future of state-owned monopolistic enterprises.
