Let's switch the salary increase proposal
published: Thursday | April 13, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WE HAVE once again come upon interesting times when we have to consider the salaries of our public sector workers, because of the ending of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) two-year wage freeze.

It is also interesting to note that the salaries of our parliamentarians will also have to be looked at too. If we can recall, I believe it was two years ago when the parliamentarians were given a (103 per cent) hike in salaries.

PROPOSAL

I have a proposal to make. Why not switch around the salary increase offers this time. Why not give the public sector workers 103 per cent increase in salaries, and the parliamentarians two to three per cent and tell everybody to hold strain for the next two years. I am almost certain that another Memorandum of Understanding could easily be worked out.

I am sure the Government will find the funds to support such a proposal since they did it two years ago, and since the new leader of our country seems to be trying hard to please most of us, then I believe this proposal would go a far way in doing so. I am sure our parliamentarians will be able to 'hold strain' with their two to three per cent increase, just like the civil servants did.

Over to you madam prime minister and the unions who are representing the hardworking people of this country.

I am, etc.,
