AS THE Supreme Ventures Jamaica Carnival festivities for 2006 approaches its climax, the annual Chukka Cove show in St. Ann gave a glimpse of what could be expected on the big day.
The massive turnout on Sunday saw patrons coming fully equipped with their rags waving, whistles blowing and bottled water splashing. The Soca madness had begun.
DJ Phil Dawg and the Peter Phillips Disco got the party started as early as 8:30 p.m., when they sounded the signal for patrons to get 'Insane' and search for a 'Nookie' tonight. They even re-mixed a few dancehall songs on Soca tracks as Busy Signal's Step Out was spun on the same 'Nookie' rhythm.
At approximately 9 p.m., it was time to get the live performances started, as Trinidad's Destra took the stage singing Jammin. However, Destra had a few things to teach the audience about 'blowing'.
BLOW THE WHISTLE
"Yow, mek mi show unno how to blow whistle," Destra said as she did three quick blows and instructed the audience to follow.
She then went on to sing 'rag in di air let mi see' and another song she dedicated to all her 'Independent ladies'. Destra's set on stage was full of life and energy below the hips, as she gyrated to the soca beat of each song that she performed.
As she took the tempo down to a slow wine, Destra begged passionately, 'Come wine on me', before she removed her jacket, exposing her bra, while she performed Carnival.
