THE EDITOR, Sir:
IN RESPONSE to Saturday's publication, 'Prison sex scandal', not only is it appalling but also disgraceful. It does not need a rocket scientist to know that if you place a mentally challenged person with predators who have long sentences, he/she will be taken advantage of.
In the first place, if the prisoner is found to be of unsound mind, he should be placed immediately in separate quarters, not placed with others. It's no different from putting a cat in a lion's cage.
RESTRUCTURING OF FACILITIES
I believe that in order to avoid those actions, a restructuring of our correctional facilities should come about without delay. It would really be interesting to know if those responsible really are aware of what is happening under their noses, or is it a matter of knowing and simply turning heads the other way because of too much paper work involved and less pay?
For whatever reason, the mentally challenged being placed in those facilities does not mean less supervision.
I am, etc.,
