Southern Region to benefit from new obstetric theatre at Mandeville Hospital
published: Thursday | April 20, 2006

THE NATIONAL Health Fund (NHF) has approved a grant of $10 million for the Mandeville Regional Hospital, to establish an operating theatre dedicated to obstetric surgical cases.

The Mandeville Hospital is the referral centre for obstetric and gynaecology cases, for the Southern Region. This comprises the parishes of Manchester, Clarendon and St. Elizabeth. The NHF said that the demand for these services has been increasing as the population expands.

Head of the Obstetric Department at the hospital, Dr. Melodee Stanley Melbourne, said that the outfitting of the theatre will enable a much-improved service to the women of the Southern Region as it will allow for a shorter time between decision and the start of surgery.

The new theatre will also better prepare the hospital to deal with mass emergency.
