Guyanese government approves printing of preliminary list of voters
published: Saturday | April 22, 2006

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC):

THE GUYANA government has raised no objection to the award of a contract for the printing of the preliminary list of electors (PLE) for the upcoming general elections, even though it says it has noted the contrasting public statements made by the Commissioners of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

"Cabinet was also advised about correspondence to the President (Bharrat Jagdeo) from GECOM, in which the Chairman had indicated that the commission would not be ready to hold elections before August 30," said Dr. Roger Luncheon, head of the Presidential Secretariat and Cabinet Secretary.

Luncheon briefing reporters after Thursday's weekly Cabinet meeting said that the Jagdeo administration had offered no objection to the contract for printing of the 2006 preliminary voters' list.
