  • Environmentalists call for end to pro-whaling

    PORT-OF-SPAIN, TRINIDAD (CMC):

Regional and international environmentalists have called on Caribbean countries to end their support for commercial whaling and adopt a position linked to "non-consumptive utilisation of whales".

Dr. Joth Singh of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) that the delegates to the two-day meeting, that ended here on Thursday, agreed on a "clear recommendation" requiring regional governments to reverse their position and support the development of the whale watching sector.

  • St Lucia reappoints La Corbiniere as AG

    CASTRIES, ST LUCIA (CMC):

Victor La Corbiniere, the unsuccessful candidate of the ruling St Lucia Labour Party (SLP) in the recent Central Castries by-election, has been re-appointed Attorney-General of this Caribbean nation.

La Corbiniere, who resigned the post in February to contest the election, took the oath of office on Thursday.

  • Lawyer sues radio personality

    CASTRIES, ST LUCIA (CMC):

A prominent media personality has been sued by a lawyer who is facing charges of fraud and perjury in St Lucia.

Attorney Leonard Ogilvy, who is currently on bail, has also filed a constitutional motion against the Attorney-General, the Director of Public Prosecutions, and Justice Sandra Mason seeking redress for what he says were "misleading" and "pre-judicial" statements made about him by public officials and sections of the media.

  • Police probe murder of young person

    CASTRIES, ST LUCIA (CMC):

St Lucia police were questioning one man in the death of 27-year-old Shervy Bernadine, who was shot in the head on Thursday.

Police said that Bernadine, the tenth person murdered here so far this year, was clutching a toy gun after he was shot in the back of the head, as feuding gangs engage in criminal activities in the capital with obvious disregard for the law.
