Cup contenders chase important victories
published: Saturday | April 22, 2006

ST. CATHERINE Cricket Club will be pushing towards victory in the Supreme Ventures Super Cup today when they descend on St. Mary at Chedwin Park.

With this being the penultimate round, St. Catherine have found a closely-knit field hot on their heels, with Manchester only two points adrift, and Kingston making a fight of it.

At present Kingston sit on 25 points along with Manchester and could prove dangerous if they win outright against the Jamaica Defence Force.

However, the soldiers have shown that while they don't play consistently well, on a given day they can be a dangerous team.

St. Catherine are hoping the soldiers are at their worst as they seek to erase some dangerous pressure.

That game will be played at Emmet Park.

CONTROVERSY

St. Catherine also need to make sure they can get their heads into the game after the controversy surrounding Jermaine Lawson over the last few weeks.

Lawson was in the midst of an interesting argument when he was called for throwing - not for the first time in his career - which could affect his bowling performance against St. Mary.

The other major contender for the title when action bowls off today will be the defending champions, who have to go to Folly Oval where they will face Portland.

Portland are not expected to provide much of a threat, especially against the bowling of Andre Dwyer, who has so far taken 38 wickets, proving to be instrumental.

Lucas, who are for all intents and purposes out of the running for a top spot, have some work to do when they await Westmoreland at Nelson Oval. Win, win, win must be their motto as they try to stave off relegation, with the memory of neighbours Kensington's demise last year still fresh in their minds.

Melbourne, who can't be counted out after a good performance in their last outing saw them moving to 24 points and within striking distance of the top three, have to continue their good work against St. Elizabeth at Alpart.

Melbourne will be hoping that their captain, Donovan Pagon, can lead from the front and get them off to good starts whenever they have to bat. Their middle order with Marlon Samuels, Carlton Baugh Jnr. and Yanick Elliot is no pushover either.

RED STRIPE CHAMPIONSHIP

In round seven of the Red Stripe Cricket Championship, St. Catherine Cricket Association take on St. Thomas at Port Esquivel, Kingston and St. Andrew host Hanover at Maxfield Park, Trelawny go to Elletson Road for a game against Police, Kensington are at home to St. James, Clarendon visit Kaiser to face St. Ann, while Boys' Town have a bye.
