Looking on are Patricia Martin-Baker (left), Clan Carthy's sports mistress and Olive McNaughton (second right), manager of The Queen's School's track team.COMMUNICATIONS GIANTS Cable and Wireless Limited contributed $350,000 to assist 14 educational institutions with expenses that they will incur for sending teams to participate at the 2006 Penn Relays, scheduled for April 27-29 at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.
Representatives from the teams were presented with cheques, each valued at $25,000, during a handing over ceremony yesterday morning at CWJ's head office on Carlton Crescent in St. Andrew.
While making the presentation, Cand Wireless' senior vice-president legal regulatory and public policy, Mrs. Camille Facey, said her company was very pleased to provide support for Jamaica's young athletes and urged them to perform well on the international stage.
She said: "Cable & Wireless has been helping to send teams to the Penn Relays for almost 15 years, and I want to encourage every athlete competing this year to do their very best and ensure that Jamaica's tradition of outstanding athletic achievement continues."
The institutions which received contributions are: Alpha Academy, Calabar High, Clan Clarthy High, Edwin Allen High, G.C. Foster College, Herbert Morrison Technical, Holmwood Technical, Jamaica College, Kingston College, the Queen's High, St. Jago High, St. George's College, the University of Technology and Wolmer's Boys.
