GIVING UP SPACE, PRIVACY
published: Sunday | April 23, 2006

ACCORDING TO real estate agent Judy Benjamin the biggest turn-off with town houses is the reality of community living.

The single house has the advantage of privacy owners can walk around their houses when they want to. They also have the option to expand the house, receive light from every angle and have less noise filtering in or out of their space.

Furthermore, Mr. Breakenridge said if someone is intruding in your space the person will not get to your door or inside your house as quickly as an intruder in a town house would.

CLEARLY DEFINED SPACE

Similar to apartments, town houses tend to have more people living in a clearly defined space. In other words, there is a high density in the living arrangement. For example, many town houses are being built on lots that previously housed just one single-family home. And there is also the concern (or fear) about who your next door neighbour is going to be.

However, real estate professional, Arnold Breakenridge noted that "The single-family home will give you the greatest degree of privacy but the least in security if you do not not already have it installed." At the same time town houses offer seemingly less security worries. Breakenridge noted that "one can go overseas and be at rest at the house knowing the system is up and functioning. Besides, your neighbour is more accessible and can better give an eye on your property."
