The missing passport

THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WOULD like to respond to the article published on Saturday April 22, in regards to the missing passport. To the writer, I sympathise with your situation, but we as individuals have a responsibility to ourselves to take the necessary precaution when transporting important documents, in your case a passport. It will cost a little extra by sending it express mail service, or courier service, with the assurance that someone has to sign for it and there is also a tracking number.
It is the policy of the passport office that if you don't have the physical passport in your hands for renewal, you will indeed have to go to the police station in your area, to report it stolen. On the other hand, if you know the passport number that was printed in your passport, then you can bypass reporting it stolen, at which time you can go into the office and give the passport number and your documents would be processed and you would receive your new passport within the allotted time period.
In all fairness, I don't think your passport is lost, just simply misplaced. Eventually, it will find its way to the intended destination. All is not lost.
I am, etc.,
