THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WAS most impressed by the stellar performance of the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) in the recently concluded deliberations of the 2006/2007 Estimates of Expenditure by the Standing Finance Committee of Parliament.
The JLP team, especially the combined forces of Opposition Leader Bruce Golding, Opposition Spokesman on Finance Audley Shaw, and Opposition Spokesman on Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Karl Samuda, was impressively probing and exacting in the over three days of serious enquiry as the party sought to defend, quite appropriately, the interest of the Jamaican people.
Even more impressive was the quality leadership demonstrated by Opposition Leader Bruce Golding, as he quite appropriately led the JLP team from the front and actively participated throughout the process. Rather sadly, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller was noticeably absent throughout the process, leaving her team to face the strong and forceful challenge posed by a seemingly serious, energised and focused JLP team.
Shall we hope that this performance by the JLP was only but a sneak preview of the kind of JLP we will be seeing from now leading up to the elections, whenever they are called?
I am, etc.,
