THE EDITOR, Sir:
KINDLY ALLOW me the opportunity to express to the Minister of Finance, members of the Cabinet and the public in general, my displeasure with his recent decision.
From my birth many moons ago, I have been an ardent supporter of West Indies cricket and never a wagonist.
Even with the 'D' grade team we have now, I still give support to the one or two players who strive for success. However, to give US$100,000,000 for the building of a stadium has passed ridiculous.
The amount quoted can never repay in dividends what the education of our young can. I have heard the Mayor of Falmouth talk of Mr. Golding being political and ridiculous in the statement he made against the decision, but it seems to me that he could benefit from some of the transformation of education. The long-term investment in the stadium will never rival what the education of our youth would bring.
Think of the little boys and girls of tomorrow; Jamaica needs investment desperately. Aren't they the best investment? We have seen what an uneducated population brings - violence, ignorance and blind political loyalties. Is that what we really hope to continue in the future?
The boys and girls sitting in those classrooms are the only real guarantees on the return of such a massive investment. They will figure out how to deal with the crisis and transform the nation.
I am, etc.,
