'Bird of Paradise' by Sonia Richards.
THERE IS a buzz on the Jamaican art scene and the word is the re-emergence of the Jamaica Guild of Artists, now running its own gallery in the newl- renovated Oakton House adjacent to York Plaza in Half-Way Tree, St. Andrew.
It is difficult not to see the Georgian-style house, as the contrast glows in the midst of the other structures around it.
The spiral staircase leads to the upper floor which houses the gallery. The building is beautifully restored to its former glory and is a breath of fresh air smack in the middle of Half-Way Tree.
SPRING FLORALS
The doors were officially opened in January 2006. Since then, patrons have been viewing an exhibition featuring contrasting painting styles on a variety of subjects, ceramics, sculpture and fine jewellery, with the recent addition of a gift shop featuring prints and a variety of craft items.
The guild's newest exhibition, 'Spring Florals', is scheduled to open at their gallery on Sunday, May 7, at 11:00 a.m.
The show will feature paintings and photographs of flowering plants, unusual blooms, and flora of all specimens in all their glorious hues and shades.
The exhibition will be opened by Wayne Gallimore, managing director of Jamagination.
RARE TREAT
Participating artists include Sonia Richards, Sharon Fox-Mould, Betty Glanville, Lennox Coke, Alphonso Blake, Ewan McAnuff, Lois Lake Sherwood, Myrth Hall-Butler, Patsy Mair, Phyll Williams, Howard Moo Young and Vivienne Burnett.
Members have been planning for this show since the opening of the new gallery, and the public is invited to a rare treat.
All items on display will be on sale and part proceeds go toward the upkeep of the gallery. This is the ideal opportunity to acquire that unusual gift for any occasion.
Members of the guild are also busy making preparations for the premier art show of the year, the Liguanea Festival of Fine Arts and Photography, scheduled for May 21.
