What is the Church doing?
published: Sunday | April 30, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE WORLD (unsaved) laughs, mocks and jeers at the idiosyncrasies of the Church in its quest to stop the legalisation of homosexual behaviour in Jamaica. The question is often asked: What is the church doing?

I remember a time when the Church spoke out about gambling, the then leaders of the day said that it was not a question of "morality but economics". Economically, are we better off, or are we now more entrenched in debt than before?

I remember a time when the church marched against carnival being celebrated at Easter, which the élites found amusing. I remember a time when the Church spoke out on several issues in the nation and the world's response was "Let the Church be silent and only discuss church business, let secular business remain secular business."

WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR REPORT?

The Church has always spoken about morality whether to its members or to the world, but who has believed our report? Our current problems did not occur suddenly, but are rooted in a predominantly amoral/immoral lifesyle, whether it is adultery, stealing, lying, covetousness, idolatry, murder, taking the Lord's name in vain, dishonouring parents, keeping the Sabbath, or acknowledging God.

Is the church advocating that we beat/maim/kill homosexuals? No! It addresses this sin in a call for repentance. While other sins were borne by individuals/ families and punished by death, stoning etc., homosexuality (male and female) is the only sin which incurred the wrath of God, without warning to that city, in which a whole city was destroyed.

The Bible says that as in the days of Noah so shall it be when Christ returns. So the Church will be mocked and jeered and scorned until ... but preach and live! God is no respecter of persons. The soul that sins will die and no sin will enter heaven.

I am, etc.,

A. DELORES FORRESTER
