PNP signals election mode
published: Monday | May 1, 2006

Bi-monthly meeting of the People's National Party's National Executive Council held at the Jamaica Conference Centre downtown Kingston, yesterday. - NORMAN GRINDLEY /DEPUTY CHIEF PHOTOGRAPHER

THE PEOPLE'S National Party (PNP) has brought forward the date for submission of candidates for local government and general elections.

According to Information Minister Colin Campbell, the party had intended to receive submissions up to the end of June this year. However, during a meeting of the party's National Executive Council (NEC) yesterday, the decision was taken to move the date for candidate submissions up to May 22. The candidate submissions will be presented at the main NEC meeting slated for May 28.

Mr. Campbell said this was a signal that the PNP was in election mode, noting that local government elections were constitutionally due in June. He however declined to comment when asked if the move had any implications for the date of the next general election.

CANDIDATES LIST

Mr. Campbell noted that the party would be extremely busy during the next three weeks as the list of candidates was being compiled.

Yesterday's NEC meeting held at the Jamaica Conference Centre in Kingston, followed one on Saturday, both of which were addressed by Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller in her capacity as party president. Robert Pickersgill, party chairman, explained that Mrs. Simpson Miller delivered a stern address that was well received.
