THE EDITOR, Sir:
I DO not believe Nico Moon to be serious in his letter to the editor of April 28, entitled 'Prostitution: another view'. Perhaps, the writer should read The Sunday Gleaner of April 30 where the state of nurses and the health system is recorded in sad detail.
How will the 'sex workers' be continuously certified if we cannot even take care of our every-day health needs? And what message are we continuing to send to our young?
Giving an aberration respect-ability by simply changing its name is no solution for the breakdown of values in the society.
We have so easily glamourised crime in this society by just using euphemisms. Thus, known vicious extortionists and well-known lawbreakers become 'area leaders' and those who steal electricity become 'informal users'.
'Sex workers' are prostitutes or whores. There is no need to sanitise the world's oldest profession in a vain attempt to make it more socially acceptable.
All we need to do is enforce the law without hesitation, instead of turning a blind eye to problems, only to have them mushroom out of control.
I am, etc.,
