Cricket by TV

THE EDITOR, Sir:
A JAMAICAN,living and studying overseas, in yesterday's Gleaner, asked the question: "Is crime a threat to Cricket World Cup?" To my mind the answer has to be 'yes' but I am sure others will disagree with me. I fully appreciate the points raised in the letter but it doesn't just stop there.
As things currently stand, the police seem unable to bring to justice an unsophisticated local gunman that shoots someone and rides off on a bicycle. What is going to happen if Al-Qaeda comes to town? The Cricket World Cup is a glorious opportunity for a Bin Laden to make a statement.
The only factor which I think may spare us a visit from him is the fact that the Americans are not really into cricket and are unlikely to be here in numbers sufficient to interest him. We can only hope, pray and cross our fingers but I know I am not the only person, Jamaican or otherwise, who will not be taking in the cricket except from in front of a television set.
I am, etc.,
