Slayers knock off the Wizards

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS St. George's Slayers knocked off the Denham Town Wizards 75-72 to inch closer to the league's second spot as KFC/bmobile National Basketball League (NBL) action continued on Tuesday evening at the National Stadium courts.

The scorching Slayers, who registered a win over the Blazing Panthers on Monday, notched their fourth straight win.

Andree Wilson top-scored for Slayers with 22 points and he also hauled in eight rebounds. Slayers found themselves trailing 19-13 after the first quarter and by a single point at halftime at 29-28.

However, by the end of third quarter they had played their way into the lead and held a 58-53 advantage going into the final stanza which saw them outscore the Wizards 19-17 despite a determined effort by Anthony Farquharson who had 27 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Kali McCarthy added to St. George's tally with 14 points as the win sees them move to a 15-5 record with 35 points.

Despite the loss, Denham Town narrowly hold on to the second place with a 16-4 record and 36 points, but have now lost four of their past five games. Carl Wellington had 20 points and 10 rebounds in a losing effort.

While the Wizards lost ground, Urban Knights extended their lead out front when they blew away the Rainbow Storms 83-60 in the night's other game. Damian Gardner had 22 points and eight rebounds for the winners along with Lancelot Grandison who added 15 points and snatched three steals.
