Party rejects Panday's resignation
published: Friday | May 5, 2006

PORT-OF-SPAIN, TRINIDAD, (CMC):

As long talks between the fractured leadership of the Opposition United National Congress (UNC) Wednesday failed to reach an agreement on the issue of the chief whip, the party's executive later rejected the resignation of Basdeo Panday as chairman of the party.

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar and political leader Winston Dookeran, who are on either side of the divide in the UNC, met at Dookeran's constituency office in St. Augustine Wednesday but at the end of the day, the issue of chief whip was still hanging.

Lasting over an hour, the political leader and the Opposition Leader both, however, described the talks as "fruitful and candid."
