Task Force on Crime findings to go public
published: Friday | May 5, 2006

THE BRUCE Golding-appointed Task Force on Crime is to make its findings public on Monday.

Former Police Commissioner Colonel Trevor McMillan chaired the committee appointed by the Opposition Leader last December while other members were Professor Anthony Harriott, Dr. Henley Morgan, Marguerite Orane, Peter John Thwaites, Bill Thomas and Errol Strong.

The Opposition Leader said yesterday that a copy of the report entitled 'A Roadmap To a Safe and Secure Jamaica' has already been submitted to Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller.

Mr. Golding said the task force, in its recommendations, also considered the findings of previous committees.

RAFT OF RECOMMENDATIONS

He added that the task force has put forward a raft of recommendations including: controlling corruption; breaking the links between politics and crime; dismantling the garrisons; transforming the security forces; improving the justice system and creating strategies for community renewal.

"I don't propose at this stage to comment on the recommendations since we on this side have not yet had the opportunity to study them in detail," Mr. Golding told the House of Representatives during his contribution to the 2006/2007 Budget Debate.
