THE EDITOR, Sir:
I AGREE with the sentiments expressed by Peter Espeut on Jamaicans in the United Kingdom. The social system in the U.K. has been geared to help those who seek assistance and even try in many ways to improve the lives of the lazy bones who care only to live off the welfare available.
This last small category of people are derogatorily labelled spongers who have not made use of the education system, employment opportunities and skills-training avenues open to all who make the effort.
The U.K. made use of ideas from all around the world, especially since World War II and has developed a system coveted by most other states worldwide. Can and will Jamaica make use of the vast talents or skills and resources of those who have gained experience from the so-called developed countries and have now returned to Jamaica?
I have lived in the U.K. for most of my working life and experienced good and bad, but reached positions there that many local British could only dream of, because I took the opportunities available.
Jamaicans need to stop this phrase "nutten nawh gwan fe me" and make positive efforts for things to happen for themselves. No one will hand it on a plate. There are sources here to be tapped. If sought they can be found.
I am, etc.,
FRANCIS
