THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE MAY 3rd publication refers to 'polygamy being legal'. I dare say that such a practice would be suicidal in every sense of the word.
I say this without any reservation, although it is a well stated fact that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I respect the writer's thought, but we have to take into consideration that there are those who already have children scattered all over the country, with several baby mothers and not supporting the children, not to mention those who have taken the matrimonial vows to be committed to one person and still they have mistresses equally with the wives.
Marriage is an institution that should not be entered into lightly. Many have ended in divorce because they were not committed in the first place, while others enter into marriage for their own selfish reasons.
Infidelity will continue and there is nothing we can do about it, so we don't need to add more stress. I congratulate the few men who have kept true to their vows, whether through marriage or simply living together as a couple.
Polygamy is practised in some countries and those females who have lived in it are coming out now to say that it is not all good as it is perceived to be, but they are provided for in terms of financial support. Having to wait their turn to be intimate with their husband can become stressful at times.
Just imagine what would happen if polygamy became legal. Not everybody plays by the rules.
Instead we must pray for the few good men who are trying to live up to the standard of what marriage is all about.
I am, etc.,
