'Tis budget time again in Jamdown
published: Saturday | May 6, 2006

I OWE! I owe! So off to work I go! Behold, the words which art emblazoned across the windscreen of a decrepit chariot traversing the North Coast Highway, bursting at the seams with early- morning commuters bound for the tourism capital of the rock, many of whom no doubt art on a quest to alleviate their personal liabilities.

Dearly beloved, 'tis budget time again in Jamdown and already buzz words such as 'The National Debt' and 'Balance of Payments' hath acquired the usual prominence in the debate of the day. Verily I say to ye, thou shall suffer many fools as the recurring nine-day wonder of the appropriate economic model exhausts its course on talk radio and in the print media.

Be ye not flabbergasted O Jamdown, for Peto hath not lost his marbles. Nay, this is not a broadside of fellow scribes, nor do I presume to be an authority of any sort to such extent that I shouldst deny any man his say about national life on the rock.

HEALTHY EXCHANGES

For I Peto am supremely excited about Jamdown's vibrant attitude towards healthy exchanges, consequently I try to be tolerant and objective to every viewpoint and expression. Nevertheless, there art armchair analysts amongst thee who serve no better purpose than to muddy the waters and befuddle the daylights out of the people, such that simple folk hath no affinity to such matters which art ultimately critical to their economic well-being.

Dearly beloved, it is written that 'tis better to keep thy mouth shut and be considered a fool, than to speak and confirm it to be so.

Hear O Jamdown, for the owner of a rickety old bus is cognisant that the only way to eliminate his debts is to push old faithful to an excessive-smoke-from-the-exhaust-pipe limit, yet certain parliamentarians habitually place the national economy within the realms of rocket science.

If the people art not completely appraised of their role in the economic system and art not sold on the tangible benefits to them at ground level then all shall be naught.

Let not the imposing debt burden cause thee to ignore the bigger picture, for the people art the most essential resource in the economy and they require social services to enhance their way of life thus preparing them physically and psychologically to be a productive force.

HUGO'S GENEROSITY

Seek ye not the nectar of debt salvation within the PetroCaribe deal for the savings accrued therein art intended for social programmes as a specific condition of Hugo's generosity towards the lands of the Caribbean Sea.

But where PetroCaribe hath given thee breathing space within thy own coffers, plough those funds into expanding productive capacity and increasing efficiency within production.

Apply ye a holistic approach to the business of increased employment and productivity on the rock, including improving the education standard of the workforce up to the appropriate level required for international competition; expanding output and perfecting the quality of goods and services for which there art vibrant existing or potential markets; phasing out those industries which art deadwood within the economy, and reducing administerial bungling and corruption.

Hear O Jamdown, for yours is but a developing economy which woefully lacks natural resources, but thy human component is a phenomenal advantage for it is chock-full of versatile, capable and enthusiastic people who shall bring home the bacon with much gusto if they art given the correct tools to do the job and art properly directed. Construct thy economic framework around the people for we owe, and off to work we must go. Selah.
