RICARDO GARDNER will be captaining Jamaica's team for the second time in his career, a decision that came despite a disappointing opening against Australia recently. The move to make Gardner the top man has been in the works for a few months and his continuation in the role became even more likely after he captained Bolton Wanderers in the English Premier League for the first time last month.
Gardner was officially named as the captain of a strong Jamaica squad, who will play against England on June 3 at Old Trafford during a press conference at the Jamaica Football Federation Office on Thursday.
Downswell thinks that at this stage in his career he fully deserves the title that has been bestowed on him.
"Well he captained the game against Australia and the Federation met and felt that he was the most competent candidate.
"Captaining Bolton Wanderers speaks volumes for him and that sort of justified our belief in him. For a Jamaican to captain a Premier League team means that he has exhibited a high level of maturity. Being a fixture in that Bolton team speaks volumes to his discipline and I think he is a shining example for our young players," said Downswell.
