St Catherine remain on course for the double
published: Monday | May 8, 2006

Paul-Andre Walker, Staff Reporter

SUPREME VENTURES Super Cup champions St. Catherine Cricket Club remained on course for the double by booking their place in the final of the Challenge Shield, after winning first innings honours against Melbourne in their drawn game at Chedwin Park yesterday.

Chasing Melbourne's first innings total of 178 all out, St. Catherine made 231 after resuming on 164 for four in the morning.

Leon Bent, five for 39, and Damion Jacobs, four for 65, were the main wicket-takers for Melbourne, whose first bat cost them a place in the final.

For St. Catherine, Keith Hibbert was the main scorer yesterday, striking 47 to join Damion Bryce, who made 71 on Saturday as the teams major contributors.

Bevan Brown, who had a marvellous time with the ball on Saturday, helped in no uncertain terms with the bat as well, scoring a more than useful 26.

With the game already out of their reach, Melbourne, batting a second time, made 148 for five at the close of play.

In that inconsequential innings, Donovan Pagon, who had been sent back for nought on Saturday, top scored for the team from Courtney Walsh Boulevard with a well-played 63 not out.

Omar Allison also batted well in the lost cause, racking up 43 before being sent back to the pavilion.

Controversial West Indies pacer, Jermaine Lawson was again among the wickets, grabbing three for 52 to add to his first innings tally of four for 59.

Odean Brown was the only other wicket-taker in Melbourne's second innings with one for 36. He took three for the game after his first innings total of two for 29.

The first innings victory means that St. Catherine will await the winner of the second semi-final between Manchester and Kingston at Kirkvine this weekend.
