MOTHER NATURE WELCOMES MOMS
published: Thursday | May 11, 2006

Mother's Day lunch in the river at Boon Hall Oasis, on the edge of the Wag Water River, is different! - PHOTOS BY ROSEMARY PARKINSON

THIS SUNDAY is Mother's Day and the time to honour all those who were, are and will become mothers, so why not make it a very special day.

GAP CAFÉ

Climb into the amazing Blue Mountains to the historic Gap Café. Here, while doctor birds flit and dance before your eyes and the sweet impatience lights up your life, sit on the verandahs overlooking the most magnificent views of Hollywell Park and its valleys below sipping an early morning coffee from the Blue Mountains. Enjoy the scrumptiuos a la carte fare that Kingstonian Dexcar Denton will be putting together with the resident chef.

I heard whisperings about Mango Cheesecakes, fresh Blackberry Tarts (from Top Mountain) and Poached Otaheite Apples topped with whipped Ortanique Cream - the latter having been tasted by moi is pure divine intervention.

Brunch is from 11:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m. but all are invited to come earlier for a complimentary morning rum punch and a view of paintings compliments of Rosemary Thwaites' Art Centre. Other artists showing are: Lancelot Ferron, Richard Hall, Marcia Biggs, Ray Jackson, George Rodney, Gavin Gunther and Ken Spencer. A Mother's Day gift right on the spot!

BOON HALL OASIS

And, a bird also whispered something about another nature setting that sounds superb - Boon Hall Oasis on the edge of the Wag Water River. Go up to Stony Hill Square, turn right coming from Kingston and follow the signs. You will be blessed with everything green that Jamaica has to offer. If you're in for something different, reserve a table set right in the river itself! Cooling, to say the least. Brunch is a buffet of the traditional with the Braemar Gallery showing off their artists, Dwight Richards and friends entertaining and a fashion show by Les Campbell. It all begins at 10:30 a.m.

CONTEMPORARY GALLERY

More gallery excitement brings Dian Watson's great fare at her Contemporary Gallery's buffet on Hope Road. Sitting on antique furniture bedecked with fine linens, silverware and tableware surrounded by the best in art seems charming.

NORMA'S ON THE TERRACE

History comes to the fore with Devon House's Norma's On The Terrace and a menu fit for a Queen, especially put together by Norma Shirley. Both these ladies intend to make Bon Appetit's story on them seem slight!

CULLODEN CAFÉ

Want Mom to enjoy the peace and quiet of a seaside affair? Then make a trip to Dessert Mania at Culloden Café near Whitehouse, Westmoreland. It begins at noon and their famous Tia Maria Chocolate Cake is taking centre stage. Breakfast will be from 8:00 a.m. and according to Sue Lyons, she hopes people will stay on for the glorious sugar shock at noon.

Happy Mother's Day to all mothers across Jamaica and those who read us on the Internet.
