Powell can run much faster, manager says
published: Saturday | May 13, 2006

Powell

FORMER WORLD 100m record holder Asafa Powell's manager, Paul Doyle, is assuring the Jamaican public that his athlete will regain the record.

"The people in Jamaica should not worry because Asafa (Powell) can certainly run faster than 9.76," said Doyle, who was on hand to witness Gatlin's world record run of 9.76 seconds in Doha, Qatar, yesterday.

Powell, who is currently in Santa Domingo where he will run the 4x100m relay today, will next run in the 100m sprint on June 2 in Oslo.

The 24-year-old Gatlin beat the previous mark of 9.77 set by Powell in Athens in June last year to finish ahead of Nigeria's Olusoji Fasuba (9.84) and fellow Ameri-can and Olympic 200 metres champion, Shawn Crawford, (10.08) at yesterday's IAAF Super Tour meeting, and according to Doyle, it was a fast race.

"It certainly looked a fast race. He (Gatlin) was in second until about 70 or 80 metres. He was beaten out of the blocks by Olusoji Fasuba, and even Terrence Trammell," Doyle explained.

Doyle also said the conditions in Qatar during the race were favourable.

"I don't doubt the wind reading, but it certainly could have been close. One side of the track it was over three," said Doyle, in the interview from Qatar.
