Regenta Peck-Miller: Still recovering
published: Monday | May 15, 2006

Keisha Shakespeare-Blackmore, Staff Reporter

YOU SENT us your letters and by overwhelming agreement, the judges agreed that Regenta Peck-Miller is a Mother in a Million.

To help her forget her pain, she was feted by the Jamaica Pegasus hotel at their annual Mother's Day brunch yesterday. She was also a special guest at the Manhattans' Mother's Day concert and she will receive a plaque from The Gleaner.

"I DIED many times, over and over. I felt like I was being ripped apart; my breath stopped and I had to shout out for my heart to start working again," recalled Regenta Peck-Miller after she heard the news of her two sons' death.

DEATH OF HER SONS

Giovonni Miller, 34, and Kevin Miller, 27, were driving along Mandela Highway last November 7, when the car got out of control and ran off the road. The brothers did not survive. They died on the spot. Mrs. Peck-Miller lost two sons out of her seven children in one day. She noted that there is a song, 'You will understand it better by and by,' but currently, she cannot understand the death of her sons.

Mrs. Peck-Miller, 53, principal at Gregory Park Basic School in Portmore, St. Catherine, said that every day she goes home she is reminded of her sons. But she has been trying to cope with the ordeal though it has been very difficult. She said she has gained strength through the words of encouragement from others. Also different church groups visited and fasted with her. She said the good things that people say about her sons keep her going.

Currently, she is in the healing process and is getting counselling. But she still has a lot of unresolved issues to deal with. Also, this Mother's Day will not be the same for her. In fact, she said she is not looking forward to it.

"Kevin normally makes Mother's Day extra special for me. Not that the other children do not make it special, but Kevin and I were very close. And he always does special things for me," Mrs. Peck-Miller said.
