New head for surgeons' body
published: Monday | May 15, 2006

MCDONALD

PROFESSOR ARCHIBALD McDonald is the new president of the Association of Surgeons in Jamaica (ASJ).

He was invested at the association's 48th Annual Conference at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston on Saturday.

Professor McDonald, a consultant in general surgery, at the University Hospital of the West Indies and the Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of the West Indies, succeeds Dr. Geoffery Williams.

MAIN FOCUS

According to Professor McDonald, during his presidency, he will focus on three areas:

setting minimum standards for health care in surgical practice throughout the island;

energising research by surgeons, especially those in rural, areas and,

increasing the involvement of younger members in the activities of the association.

The ASJ has a membership of 126 surgeons aiming to advance all branches of surgery in Jamaica and to promote social and professional interaction between the widely-scattered surgeons in the island and those in other Caribbean territories.
