PORT MARIA, St. Mary:
COUNCILLORS OF the St. Mary Parish Council have expressed disbelief at the physical condition of the fire brigade in the parish.
A report on the facility was presented at the council's recent monthly meeting in Port Maria.
According to the report, sections of the roof have caved-in and the building is in a general state of dilapidation.
The report noted that the situation is so bad that the St. Mary Health Department has deemed it unfit for use and said several unsuccessful attempts have been made to get a new building.
The fire department also complained about the lack of necessary equipment needed for the its operations.
In the meantime, the parish has been promised two fire trucks by the end of the month.
The issue of an increase in the number of HIV/AIDS cases was also raised at the meeting.
Medical Officer of Heath, Dr. San San Win, reported that to date there are 69 confirmed cases in St. Mary.
She also expressed concern over what she said has been an increase in the number of sex workers in the parish.
