National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) accused of doing sloppy job
published: Monday | May 15, 2006

Claudia Gardner, Gleaner Writer

HANOVER:

COUNCILLOR OF the Cauldwell division in Hanover, Sheridan Samuels, on Thursday, accused the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) of doing "substandard work" in the parish.

Mr. Samuels' comments followed a report by the NSWMA's public cleansing inspector for Hanover, Lansford Cunningham.

According to Mr. Cunningham, the NSWMA has removed the only garbage skip from the community of Mountpelier in the Sandy Bay division, because garbage truck drivers and motorists in the community were having confrontations.

Mr. Cunningham also stated that the truck, which serves the division, had been out of service for four weeks.

But Mr. Samuels would not accept such reports. "Your agency is getting a lot of money through the council to take care of the garbage collection and the whole sanitary process, and the way you are approaching it is not right," he said.

Mr. Samuels added: "Situations like these will lead to major health problems."

According to him, the NSWMA should find a way to resolve the situation with its drivers and other motorists in Mountpelier instead of removing the garbage skip.

He also criticised the NSWMA for not paying enough attention to the town of Green Island.

"I am hearing that Green Island is just being given weekend sweepers. That means for the past three or so years since, Green Island has been kept dirty!" he lamented.
