MID-SEASON CHAMPIONS Urban Knights and Link Up All-Star secured vital game
one victories as the 2006 bmoblie/KFC National Basketball League best-of three quarter-finals got underway at the National Stadium Courts on Saturday.
In the opening game the Knights defeated Portmore Flames 73-66 in an exciting encounter.
Andy Smith's 13 points and 12 rebounds and Damion Garner's 10 points and 11 rebounds led the way for Knights, while Adrian Coote had a game-high 30 points, along with six assists and Kenardo Smith scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Flames.
The Knights, who led 34-31 at the half-time break, were made to work hard for their victory and Coote kept things close for the Flames when he rained in six three-pointers in the third quarter to end the period narrowly trailing 54-51.
Urban Knights, who are the number one seeded team in this year's play-offs, took control in the fourth quarter and pull away for the victory. They now lead the series 1-0.
Coach of Urban Knights, Calvin Martin, said: "I am very happy for the victory. I guess we were a bit lucky, the Flames are a very good team and I hope we can come out on Monday (today) and try and keep it close and hopefully we can win again," he added.
Meanwhile, coach of the Portmore Flames, Kevin Pinnock, was very disappointed.
"It's really a tough loss but I think my team played up to their potential apart from the few mistakes that we made, but again that is part of the game. We had a number of unforced turnovers, that was our biggest problem tonight (Saturday)," he said.
In the night's other game, Garfield Campbell's 25 points and seven rebounds, well supported by team-mate Devon Campbell with 20 points and six rebounds, led Link Up to an exciting 82-81 victory over the defending champions St. George's Slayers.
Campbell hit the game winning shot with four seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
In a fiercely contested game, Link Up All-Stars blew a 17-point first quarter lead, only to find themselves trailing 60-58 by the end of the third.
The Slayers kept it close in the fourth quarter and looked to have the game won when they took a 81-79 lead with less than 15 seconds remaining. But with the clock running down, Campbell, after missing a three point attempt, was able to collect his own rebound and threw up a shot which left the Slayers stunned when it swished straight through the net. The upset sees Link Up All-Star up 1-0.
Michael Jackson, with a game-high 37 points and Andre Wilson with 19 led the way for the Slayers.
Games Two is on later at the Stadium Courts with Link Up playing the Slayers at 6:00 p.m., while the Knights take on the Flames at 8:00 p.m.
