Rallying around the PM
published: Tuesday | May 16, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

INSTEAD OF rallying around to lend a helping hand in steering the country out of the decay and grime it has descended into, many, mainly the elite intelligentsia, seem as though they are having a problem with the fact that Portia is Jamaica's Prime Minister.

Hence, the constant negative criticism of almost everything she does. Technique and talent or the lack of it thereof is irrelevant; it is about what's in the budget that counts.

None of the seven men before her who were sworn to serve in the same office she now occupies were made to go through the wringer like they did her.

They soldier on, taking aim at her faith in the Almighty, her budget presentation and her desire to bail out the poor.

Many were disappointed that during her budget presentation she did not 'cock up her foot' like a man, bare her chest like Nanny, fall back into the 'nuh draw mi tongue' and ban-garang behaviour so they could say 'I told you so'.

And now their ridiculing and condescending attitude is doing more to raise questions than inspire confidence. It seems that many came to the PM's budget speech expecting her to dish them up omelet, but not wanting her to break eggs.

The Prime Minister during her bid to gain ascendancy had warned many of her detractors that she would see them 'eat crow'. Many have eaten and many more will.

She is a force of nature, one of God's masterpieces who is set to leave an indelible mark like none before her on the leadership of this nation.

I am, etc.,
