Under-15s get major backing
published: Tuesday | May 16, 2006

Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

WINSTON CHUNG-FAH, one of Jamaica's legendary football icons, will have the Kingston and St. Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Under-15 tournament named in his honour, and it has been sponsored by the Shipping Industry of Jamaica to the tune of $500,000.

This was announced by Stewart Stephenson, president of KSAFA, at a press conference at the boardroom of the Shipping Industry of Jamaica yesterday.

"We are very proud to have the support of the Shipping Industry of Jamaica in sponsoring our under-15 competition for the Winston Chung-Fah Trophy to the tune of half a million dollars," said Stephenson.

"Sponsorship support is not easy to get, especially when the economy is so tight; this is why we treasure the support," noted Stephenson.

Trevor Riley, general manger of the Shipping Association of Jamaica, said his organisation was proud to announce the renewal of the sponsorship of the under-15 tournament.

HIGH LEVEL OF SKILL

"Last year's tournament proved to be very successful with a high level of skill and discipline being displayed by the teams," said Riley.

Meanwhile CorahAnn Robertson Sylvester, managing director of Seaboard Jamaica Limited, the main sponsor, said "this is the second time that Seaboard Jamaica has sponsored this tournament and we are privileged to be a part of a competition that helps to mould young men."

Other sponsors of the Shipping Industry of Jamaica include: Port Contractors Ltd, Kingston Wharves, Maritime & Transport Services and Jamaica Freight and Shipping.

Defending champion Mead-haven United will lead 23 teams for the $80,000 winner's prize money, with the runner up collecting $50,000, third place $40,000 and $30,000 to the fourth-place team.

The competition kicks off today with 11 games. The duration of the matches will be 70 minutes and each team is allowed five substitutions.
