New MoU to be signed month-end
published: Wednesday | May 17, 2006

NELSON

A SECOND Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government and trade unions representing public sector workers will be signed at month-end.

This is according to Senator Dwight Nelson, president of the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU). The JCTU met on Monday to finalise the agreement that was reached with the Minister of Finance, Dr. Omar Davies, last Friday.

"We are still in the process of refining the document. All the basic agreements, such as salaries and benefits, are already in place," Senator Nelson told The Gleaner yesterday.

But he said the document will not be signed before the end of May, as Dr. Davies has overseas engagements this week.

The unions and the Govern-ment have been in discussions for a second MoU for public sector workers since the previous two-year agreement expired on March 30.

The Government had initially made a 20 per cent offer on the wage fund. But this was rejected by the JCTU, which demanded $4 billion in the first year and a 10 per cent increase across the board.
