ABEL
DR. COLIN Abel of the Busta-mante Children's Hospital has been appointed to head the Ministry of Health's Review Committee to probe the circumstances surrounding the death of a two year-old ward who died at the Glenhope Place of Safety earlier this month.
The other two members of the committee are Flo O'Connor, former head of the Jamaica Council for Human Rights, and Gail Hudson, director of human resource management and corporate services at the Ministry of Health.
Dr. Abel told The Gleaner yesterday that the committee met on Monday with Grace Allen-Young, Permanent Secretary in the ministry, who outlined their terms of reference.
According to the Health Ministry, the investigation is expected to last four weeks, after which a report is to be submitted to Minister of Health, Horace Dalley.
Two-year-old Joel Wong died in hospital after ingesting medication that was not prescribed for him.
TOOK TABLETS
According to reports, a child took the tablets from the tray of an attendant who was dispensing medication to sick children and gave them to seven others, telling them they were sweets.
The children who took the medication were hospitalised. Joel died, the others recovered and were released.
Mr. Dalley told The Gleaner that there would be a drastic shake-up at the children's home after the probe is completed.
"I gather a number of things have happened over a period of time and we will be making some very drastic changes at the Glenhope Place of Safety, in terms of the entire management team up there," he said.
