FOUR TEAMS, one dream and two spots. That's the summation as the Wray and Nephew National Premier League (NPL) play-offs kick off today with two games.
Western Confederation winners, Negril FC out of Westmoreland, take on Kingston and St. Andrew Football Association's (KSAFA) champion August Town at Frome, starting at 3:30 p.m.
St. George's United, the Eastern Confederation winner, travels to Naggo Head, the South Central Confederation champion, for a match also set to start at 3:30 p.m.
EXPERIENCED COACHES
Of the four teams, only St. George's - for one season - have ever played in the Premier League. However, three of the four coaches were plying their trade in the 2005/06 NPL.
Jerome Waite, coach of Negril FC, was sacked in February 2006 after leading Arnett Gardens to back-to-back titles in 2001 and 2002.
Christopher Bender, coach of August Town, resigned from Constant Spring on October 24, 2005, while Naggo Head coach Harold Thomas also resigned from Rivoli early in the second round of the NPL.
CONFEDERATION
So, of the four teams in the final push for a Premier League spot, three have coaches with Premier League experience. That will count for nothing really as it will boil down to which set of players need it the most.
The confederations of South Central and KSAFA saw Rivoli United and Constant Spring being demoted and would love to replace them with Naggo Head and August Town.
But Negril and St. George's FC will have other ideas.
