Businessman charged with stealing electricity
published: Friday | May 19, 2006

A DOWNTOWN Kingston business operator has been charged for stealing electricity from the Jamaica Public Service Company Ltd., (JPS) whose amnesty came to an end 10 days ago.

Reports are that the 46-year-old businessman, Muhannad Ibrahim, the operator of an electrical appliance store on Orange Street, was served with a summons by the police to appear in court next Thursday.

Mr. Ibrahim is the fourth businessman to have been charged over the past five weeks for the theft of electricity. He is also the first person to be arrested following the end of the JPS's amnesty programme which allowed persons to regularise their accounts with the light and power company without penalty.

He was nabbed on Saturday, May 13, when a JPS Revenue Protection team visited his appliance store. It is alleged that the meter at the businessman's premises was tampered with, through an illegal connection.

The power supply was disconnected and the businessman arrested.
