Who is Phillip Paulwell working for?
published: Friday | May 19, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Sister P, is Minister Paulwell working for you or is he employed and paid by us? When Jamaicans clamour for change they tend to look upwards not at their feet; it means that we want it to start with you Mrs. Prime Minister.

The mere fact that Minister Paulwell makes huge blunders costing the country millions, possibly billions and gets to keeps his job underpins the very reasons why the Jamaican economy lags behind many of its counterparts in the region and the world. It's a pity Dr. Hughes did not quantify in dollar terms what a decline of 6.3 per cent represents. This is shameful! And the entire government behaves as if its business as usual! What development! Nonsense!

It is incomprehensible that when we look at other countries where elected officials either resign or are asked to leave after making serious blunders that in Jamaica we turn a blind eye or make excuses under the cloak of politics. It is the lack of taking the bold decisions that perpetuates the culture of inefficiency, irresponsibility, poor accountability, low expectations and corruption. When poor leadership and mismanagement go unpunished at the very top of government what we get is an exponential reverberation throughout the entire populace cementing the very disease a new Prime Minister should be seeking to exorcise. Is minister Paulwell indispensable?

Slowly but surely the electorate is waking up to the hypocrisy in this government. It is evident that much of our country's social ills reside in how we lead. Whether our leaders want to believe it or not people look for good leadership through political representatives even in the worse of governments.

I am, etc.,
