THE NCB Capital Markets Golf Classic will tee off in a little over a week's time and the primary sponsors hope the inaugural tournament, expected to be an annual affair, will bring increased excitement and participation to the local golf scene.
"It is our goal to lead corporate Jamaica in its charge to not only build a better Jamaica, but to do so through the avenue of sport," said Chris Williams, managing director of NCB Capital Markets, at Wednes-day's launch of the tournament at the Cable and Wireless Golf Academy in New Kingston.
"Our interest in the sport of golf stems from the fact that it is one of a few sports which has similar attributes required for success that are the same as attributes required for creating wealth," Williams said.
WORLD-CLASS EVENTS
"Jamaica has hosted some world-class events in the sport of golf, but there has been a decline in interest in recent years. With this tournament and our support we are hoping to curb this trend," he said of the tournament which will be staged at the Caymanas Golf and Country Club.
Seventy-two invited players, golfers and non-golfers alike, are expected to take part in next Sunday's 18-hole tournament. The event which will be played under the Stableford format. The categories will include Men's (Under 40), Seniors (Over-40) and Ladies. Crystal trophies, gift vouchers to Edwin Watts/JENCARE and cellphones will be among the major prizes.
However, the day's special attraction will see some lucky person presented with a trip for two to the United States Professional Golf Association (USPGA) Tour Championship in Atlanta, Georgia in November.
As part of the build-up to the tournament, NCB Capital Markets will stage an invitational Golf Clinic tomorrow at the Golf Academy from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Invited father and son teams and ladies will receive instruction from local golf professional Jason Lopez.
