Learmond double lifts nationals
published: Monday | May 22, 2006

Richard Bryan, Freelance Writer

MANDEVILLE:

TWO GOALS by the star of the last daCosta Cup schoolboy season, Carnell Learmond, as well as an own-goal, gave the national senior outfit a 3-0 win over a Clarendon All Stars team at Jamalco yesterday.

All three goals were scored in the second half for the national team which fielded only goal-keeper Shawn Sawyers, his brother Tyrone, Fabian Davis and Desmond Breakenridge as players from the regular Reggae Boyz senior squad.

National senior coach Wendell Downswell, who said the 20-man squad for the two upcoming international matches in England will be named tomorrow, remained uncommitted as to whether he would include any player from yesterday's practice game.

"It was a good exercise and I'm sure that the players would benefit from rubbing shoulders in the national set-up. But as far as their possible inclusion where England is concerned I cannot say, as I am already sure of 17 or 18 players."

He intimated that among the local players who will be included could be Mannings High schoolboy 'keeper Dwayne Kerr, with Sawyers and Garfield Reid as almost sure picks.

He was, however, full of praise for the left-sided player, Christopher Powell, nicknamed Roberto Carlos and who played on the Clarendon All Stars team. He avoided comments on Kevin Lamey who played for 60 minutes and had one direct strike on goal, a 20-yard free-kick which needed a full stretch dive by goalkeeper Damion Crooks.
