No agreement regarding removal
published: Tuesday | May 23, 2006

JAGDEO

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA (CMC):

The Guyanese government said yesterday it had not entered into any agreement with any country allowing for the forceful removal of Guyanese nationals without an extradition request.

The Bharrat Jagdeo administration gave no reason why it was issuing the statement but said "the Government of Guyana has not entered into an agreement with any foreign government or representatives of foreign governments to allow the forceful removal of Guyanese nationals from within the jurisdiction without the resort to due process (a request for extradition)".

"The laws of Guyana and various bilateral agreements prescribe how a Guyanese national can be handed over to the custody of any foreign government, and these shall be observed in all cases, as pointed out by the Secretary to the Cabinet and Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon, at a media conference several weeks ago when queried on the issue,' it said.
