Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

THE RJR Communications Group, through its flagship company Television Jamaica Limited (TVJ), launched its exclusive World Cup 2006 coverage at its Lyndhurst Road main studio yesterday.

The one-month World Cup tournament which kicks off on June 9 and concludes on July 9 will see TVJ and its sister radio station, Hitz 92 FM, providing live and delayed coverage of all 64 games.

Cable and Wireless Jamaica Limited, Life of Jamaica and the Jamaica Observer are the major sponsors who will be involved in bringing coverage to the Jamaican audience.

Gary Allen, director of Operations, RJR Group, thanked all the early sponsors that are on board and promised an interesting broadcast.

Leading up to the World Cup, TVJ will be airing feature presentations on the participating teams with live broadcasts, starting at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 9.

ULTIMATE SHOW

Simon Crosskill, group editor, sport and station manager of Hitz 92 FM, said this is the ultimate football show.

"This is the pinnacle of footballing contest and if you don't have passion towards it, you are dead," said Crosskill. "Our coverage will be driving you into that direction. No matter what else is happening in the world, Jamaicans will want to know what is happening to their teams," he added.

David Reavley, Cable and Wireless' senior vice-president, Mobile Service, said his company was delighted to be associated with bringing to television viewers the renewal of the greatest show on earth.

"Such a spectacle demands a response from a company with proven commitment to giving the people what they deserve and what they want and Cable and Wireless and bmobile have stepped up to the plate," he noted.

Apart from the thrill of exciting plays, great goals and an enthralling World Cup spectacular, there will be a lot of give-aways from the sponsors and TVJ during the month-long tournament.
