WESTERN BUREAU:
SUNDAY'S POLICE operation in Glendevon, St. James, in which two men were fatally shot, is among several that will be carried to neutralise gang activities in the parish and the western region.
"The first step was containment, now we are pursuing them (the gangsters). This strategy will be replicated in the Area One Police Division especially in Westmoreland where there is concern due to its escalating crime," Assistant Commissioner of Police, Keith 'Trinity' Gardner, told The Gleaner on Monday.
The senior officer, who has responsibility for the parishes of Trelawny, St. James, Hanover and Westmoreland, said six of the nine wanted men had been removed from the streets.
"These gang members have been neutralised. By that I mean they have either been killed or arrested ... the noose is being tightened around their necks," he continued.
The dead gangsters are 27-year-old Garfield 'Don' Sawyers and Delano 'Bigga Crime' Williams, 22 years old, both of Norwood, St. James.
Williams was cut down during a confrontation with police on Sunday, while Sawyers died in a similar incident on April 30 at Niagra district, which borders the parishes of St. James and St. Elizabeth.
ACP Gardner explained that, even though a top 10 list of wanted men would be maintained, the scope would be broadened to pursue their cronies and associates. He concluded that the list would be constantly updated as other persons were being added.
