Jamaica-Gleaner endorses Governor-General's Youth Awards
published: Thursday | May 25, 2006

WESTERN BUREAU:

THE GLEANER Company Limited has endorsed the Governor-General's Youth Awards for the Promotion of Excellence and will be participating in a Consultative Breakfast in Hanover today.

The Round Hill Hotel will play host to the function, the first of four quarterly Consultative Youth Breakfasts of Excellence to be held in the three counties across the island.

PERFORMANCES OF EXCELLENCE

Approximately 25 young persons from the county of Cornwall, along with the Custodes and their wives, and media representatives are expected to attend today's event.

"The media is supporting the Governor-General's effort to associate his tenure of office with excellence," said Karin Cooper, corporate affairs manager at The Gleaner Company. "In doing so, he is holding a series of consultative breakfasts with young people islandwide to get their ideas on how they can be recognised for performances of excellence."

Mrs. Cooper disclosed that the Governor-General's Youth Awards is being linked with the existing Governor-General's Achievement Awards (GGAA), which is sponsored by The Gleaner Company, Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS), Victoria Mutual Building Society, among other building societies.

The GGAA is awarded to persons from humble beginnings, from each parish, who have contributed extensively to the development of the country.

INDEPENDENT COMMITTEE

An independent committee selects the nominees from a field of candidates.

"The Governor-General is employing the existing machinery of this committee to try and explore ways to recognise young people," Mrs. Cooper added.

Hugh Morris, National Coordinator of the GGAA, said the G-G's focus on youth would make a difference in society.

He said the programme is a way of avoiding mediocrity and developing confidence in young people.
