THE EDITOR, Sir:I OFFER my deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives along Highway 2000 and also along the Spanish Town Rd recently.
Let me also congratulate Mr. A. Guy Morris (May 24 edition) for pointing out some of the problems that need to be addressed by this Government and the Transport Authority.
Apart from the fact that most drivers are now faced with a long stretch of highway which is conducive to high speed driving, they are in vehicles that may be fitted with improper tyres.
Also many drivers of public passenger vehicles cannot read, period. How they got their licences is beyond me, and this is where I blame the Minister Robert Pickersgill for relaxing in his castle seemingly unaware of what is happening at the various motor vehicles depots around the country.
The whole transport system/authority needs to be revamped, rearranged and reclaimed for the good of the law abiding citizens of Jamaica. Otherwise the mayhem will continue on the highway.
The police should start a literacy campaign on all general drivers licence holders who drive PPV vehicles carrying passengers. Ask them to read on the spot any page from the newspaper or any other simple reading material. I am sure this would cut down on a lot of those who bought licences.
Something has got to be done to bring the crazy driving on the road under control. Highway 2000 is not a race track, and all vehicles using that piece of road should be roadworthy.
I am, etc.,
