VOLUNTEER OF THE WEEK: Mike Gallagher
published: Saturday | May 27, 2006

Mike Gallagher, host of The Mike Gallagher Show, broadcasting from his studio.

DURING A recent two-hour broadcast, one of America's top-rated talk shows, The Mike Gallagher Show, raised money to build 10 houses for the poorest of the poor in Jamaica.

"Each house cost US$2,000 (Ja$130,000), and my goal today is 15 houses. I know The Mike Gallagher Show can do it. I am confident. I have faith in you, so don't let me down," appealed Mike Gallagher to his 2.5 million weekly listeners in over 200 markets in the United States (US).

Mr. Gallagher, who is the sixth most listened-to-talk host in the USA, made the appeal whilst doing a live remote broadcast of his show from the studios of Love 101 in Kingston on May 8. The broadcast was made possible through a collaborative effort with Food For the Poor (FFP). The purpose of the visit was for The Mike Gallagher Show team to see the work the charity organisation is doing on behalf of the poor in Jamaica.

One of the first contributors to this FFP/Mike Gallagher Show Radio Appeal, was Ann Rice, one of America's most read and celebrated authors. Her first novel was an Interview with a Vampire, in 1973.

"As a Christian, I know the message of Christ is one that has the power to transform the lives of all, and I hope the book will help further that cause," Rice said. "He (Jesus Christ) tells us not just to love our enemies, but to love everyone. What you are doing today is beyond self, you are showing love in a special way by coming to the assistance of a Christian charity organisation like Food For the Poor which has over the years been helping thousands and thousands of people. I congratulate you for showing your love for humanity."

Food For the Poor (FFP), the third largest international charity in the U.S., is a Christian relief and development organisation that has implemented a highly efficient strategy for aiding the destitute of the Caribbean and Latin America. In the last 24 years, with the partnership of many donors, FFP has shipped over $3 billion in aid to the region.
