Challenge final fairly balanced
published: Saturday | May 27, 2006

LEAGUE CHAMPIONS St. Catherine and Kingston are locked in an intriguing battle entering today's second day of their three-day Supreme Ventures Challenge Final at Kensington Park.

Scores were: Kingston 160; St. Catherine 92-4.

Bowlers dominated yesterday's opening day at the park, as national spinners Odean Brown and Bevon Brown shared seven wickets for St. Catherine, while Fabian Bryce hit back with three early wickets for Kingston.

Electing to bat, Kingston failed to build up the 33-run opening stand between former National Youth players Duran White, 17, and Simon Jackson, 15, as Odean Brown enjoyed success in the middle.

STARING DOWN THE BARREL

After former West Indies batsman Roland Holder, 24, left leg before to Odean Brown at 79-5, and Nehemiah Perry was dismissed by Oniel Richardson at 130-7, the Tigers were staring down the barrel.

Captain Kerry Scott tried to revive his team's innings, but despite a fighting, unbeaten 41, Kingston found the bowling of Brown, Richards and Damion Morgan towards the end hard to handle.

Leg-spinner Odean ended with 4-53 from 18 overs, off-spinner Bevon 3-35 from 19 overs and Morgan 2-9 from 5.4.

In their reply, second-change bowler Forbes never gave the Saints any time to settle and it wasn't long before he dug his way into their top order.

He first had Danza Hyatt, 20, then Tamar Lambert, five, and Keith Hibbert, 10, all edging behind and along with Damion Bryce who went caught at bat-pad off Perry (1-26), St. Catherine were left in dire straits.

Forbes has so far taken 3-23.
